LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF
I am Dr. Nona Owens, a licensed psychologist with over 30 years of experience. I am a proud graduate of Mississippi State University, where I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, a Master's Degree in Special Education, and a Doctorate Degree in Psychology. I then became licensed by the State of Mississippi to practice psychology.
After I left the academic setting and started into the work force, I realized that I was just beginning my education. Not only have I learned more about the field of clinical psychology through continuing education and training, but through life experiences. Personal and work experiences have helped mold me into the therapist I am today. I am a firm believer that God put me into situations which helped me learn and better understand how to help others.
My first job was working as a Special Education Teacher for children with learning disabilities and developmental delay. I then worked as a School Psychologist while completing my doctorate in psychology. It was at that point that I decided I would continue my training to focus in the clinical aspect of psychology, starting me on a continuing path in this training.
I have worked as a therapist in a Community Mental Health Center where I provided evaluations and counseling for both children and adults. I left that position to help develop an inpatient psychological program and school for adolescents with behavior and emotional problems.
The job which followed is perhaps the one I take the most joy and pride in. I became mom to three wonderful children, twin girls, and a little boy. My husband and I decided that I would devote my time to family, and my practice was put on hold. As the children got school age, I began to work during school hours. My three are now successful adults, and I take pride in their accomplishments (and my grandchildren).
For fourteen years, I did mental and intellectual exams to help determine eligibility for those seeking disability. I pride myself on my skills in diagnosis of mental issues. During this time, I also worked in private practice, as well as a family therapist to those who had family members in long term treatment for substance abuse.
I was then offered a position working with geriatric patients in nursing homes. I did individual therapy and consultation there. My work then took a turn to a younger population, where I worked as a psychologist for youth with emotional and behavioral problems in a juvenile detention setting.
Through the years, I have done adjunct teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level for four different colleges and universities.
I have been fortunate enough to have work which provided challenges with a variety of individuals and work settings; however, the pull for going back into private practice was always there. And, just as many things come when the time is right, I opened my office in November, 2010.
